Pebble Beach, CA Elder Abuse Alert : Hacked Facebook Account

A woman holding her hands over the shoulder of another person.

There are too many elder abuse scams to count on all ten fingers, but if you pay attention and don’t give out any personal information or access to your bank accounts, you should be fine.  The latest one that AARP heard about was a woman who got a Facebook message, allegedly from her nephew, saying “Auntie.  I found this great investment. I’ve doubled my money.  She clicked on the link and invested $12,000 which was turned into BitCoin and vanished into the ether.  It turns out that her nephew’s Facebook account had been hacked and the fraudsters were sending out these messages to friends and family.

There is good news for those suffering from hearing loss—you can now buy a hearing aid without having a doctor’s examination or a prescription, thanks to a new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rule.  It allows for the retail sale of hearing aids for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.  A report by the Federal Government estimated that 28.8 million people could benefit from a hearing aid, but currently only 1 out of 5 people who need one get it.

Monterey, CA Elder Abuse Alert : Working From Home Scam

A man helping an older woman walk with a cane.

There are so many online scams to watch out for it just gives me a headache.  One of the latest discovered by AARP involved a woman who was offered a job that she could do from home.  They sent her a W-9 form and a check for $3,000.  After she deposited the check, she was instructed to transfer $1,900 via a Bitcoin ATM to “ensure their financial linkup was secure.â€Â  After she made the transfer, her bank called her to inform her the check was fake.

How To Live To Be 100 Years Old

A woman in blue swimming suit standing on the edge of pool.

The number of Centenarians continues to increase, although the “average†life expectancy is in decline due to COVID-19, opioid drug overdoses and other issues.  The Wall Street Journal recently interviewed one of them, 100 year old Charlotte Sanddal.  The World War II veteran attributes some of her good health to swimming regularly.  A friend encouraged her to enter a freestyle event at the 1994 Montana Senior Olympics, where she won the gold medal.  Girls didn’t have the opportunity to compete in sports when she grew up during the 1920’s.  After winning her medal at age 72, she started training with a Masters swimming program near her home in Helena, Montana.  She slowly learned to flip turn, a technique used to change directions by somersaulting and pushing off the pool wall with your feet, and got all four strokes down.  Butterfly was the hardest, she said.  Congratulations on your longevity Charlotte.

Cancer-Detection Blood Tests Increasingly Used

A man in white lab coat and tie.

Blood tests which can pick up early signs of cancer are growing in usage.  Illumina Inc. recently disclosed that its Grail unit has  has sold 38K of its test (which costs $949) since it debuted in June of 2021.  This comes despite the fact that most insurance companies don’t cover the cost so it is an out-of-pocket expense.  Also known as liquid biopsies, they are designed to augment traditional screening tests.  Analyst Puneet Souda at SVB Securities estimates they could eventually reach $50 billion in annual revenue, although he didn’t predict in which year this would occur.

FTC Says Companies Using Sophisticating Technology To Invade Privacy

A woman is helping an older man with his shirt off.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released a report recently about how companies deploy “dark patterns†in advertising for enticing potential customers, manipulating them into buying their products while at the same time giving up their privacy.  The report came following a 2018 lawsuit against Lending Club Corp. which eventually agreed to pay out nearly $10 million to 61,990 consumers who were charged hidden fees while the company advertised that there were hidden fees.  In fact, Lending Club was slicing money right off the top as the loan was being funded.  The FTC outlined three principles companies must follow or risk being sued by the FTC:

Disclose clearly and accurately the material terms of the sale contract such as costs, deadlines to cancel, frequency of charges, and disclosure of essential information;

Obtain the customer’s informed consent before the payment is made; and

Provide an easy and simple cancellation process.

It’s Official : Covid-19 Booster Is Effective Against Omicron-19

A group of people giving thumbs up to the camera.

Pfizer and BioNTech recently released research which found that the new booster generates a strong immune response against the Omicron-19 variant.  Better late than never I suppose—I have already gotten mine.  But hopefully the research will prove to those skeptical against getting vaccinated at all.

Mental Health Tied To Diet

Although it would be stating the obvious that fruit is better for you than potato chips, a new study from Aston University in Birmingham, England, found that eating healthy snacks rather than other options like potato chips can help stave off psychological and memory problems.  The findings, which were published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found that those who ate fruit more often showed reduced symptoms of depression and greater positive psychological well-being.  More frequent eating of potato chips and other savory snacks resulted in increased anxiety, depression, stress and reduced psychological well being.  Eating a portion of fruit of any size was good for mental health.
