Diet One Of The Keys To Longevity

Eating healthier can increase your life span and there are some delicious and nutritious options such as the Mediterranean diet.  Simple carbs like white rice and potatoes lack the fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals of more complex grains, Emma Newell, a registered dietician at NourishRx told AARP Bulletin (December 2022/January 2023, page 21).  Choosing smarter options can lower cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar, improve gut health and boost energy levels.  The alternative isn’t just brown rice.  Chef Franklin Becker of the Press Club Grill has some suggestions on high-fiber carb side dishes which are delicious.  These include barley, which is subtly sweet and chewy and goes well with salads, Korean dishes or paired with bitter greens like escarole.  Farro is also a good choice, and goes well in pilafs, salads, steamed with kale and squash, or cooked risotto-style with Parmesan cheese.  You can also give bulger a shot.  It is often used in Turkish cuisine and has a popcorn like scent when cooked.

The Oldest American Dies at 115 Years Old

The oldest person in America, Bessie Hendricks of Iowa, who lived through the roaring ‘20s, two Great World Wars, the launch of the Internet and then the pandemic, has passed away at the age of 115 on January 3.  When she turned 112, she told a reporter than the secret to her longevity was hard work, staying away from doctors and making sure you eat sweets.  Making it to Centenarian status (100+ years old) is rare.  According to the United Nations, there were over 97K Centenarians in the U.S. in 2021, almost double the number there were in 2010.  In 1950, there were only 2,300.

Investing In Aging In Place Companies

A woman is helping an old man

Nobody wants to spend their final years in a nursing home, which is why I founded Family inHome Caregiving, which focuses on helping seniors remain in their own home safely and healthy.  The Wall Street Journal recently ran an interesting story about seniors wanting to invest in stocks which are focused on this growing market of providing goods and services to those aging in place.  Here are a few of your options:

Hartford Funds launched the Hartford Longevity Economy ETF (HLGE).  The ETF tracks the Hartford Longevity Economy Index, an index of companies that support aging in place, home modification, working longer, performance health, social connections, financial freedom, mobility, human enhancement and entertainment.  The fund has an expense ratio of 0.44%.

Global X Aging Population ETF (AGNG) invests in the services side of aging with positions in healthcare companies, pharmaceuticals, senior-living facilities and age-tech companies.  The fund has an expense ratio of 0.5%.

BlackRock’s iShares Aging Population UCITS ETF (AGED) offers a global play on the longevity theme.  The fund invests in developed and emerging markets companies focused on aging.  The fund’s expense ratio is 0.40%.

COVID Going On Three Years Now, We Still Need Our Booster Shots

Three vaccine bottles are shown with the words " covid-1 9 coronavirus vaccine ".

Unless you are just getting over COVID-19 (in which case you can wait three months from the onset of symptoms, according to the CDC), make sure you get your booster shots on schedule.  Other than getting all of your vaccinations, there are a few lifestyle changes which can boost your immune system.  Not smoking, not drinking excessively, exercising regularly and following a healthy diet,†according to infections disease expert Dr. Lawrence Liverornese, chairman of the department of medicine at Main Line Health System, can boost your immune system, he told AARP Bulletin.  COVID-19 can also cause other problems—older adults are six times more likely to suffer a heart attack within a week of catching the flu.  Also, make sure to get your flu shot, although do know that this is not 100% protection (there are more than 200 viruses out there, and vaccinations can’t cover every one of them).

New 3G Device Coming To Market Which Can Detect Strokes

A stethoscope and heart on the table.

I read a story saying that every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, a shocking statistic.  Some are massive and easy to recognize.  Others are small and can be undetectable.  A recent study of in-hospital strokes found that most go undetected for more than four hours, which can be very dangerous.  Thankfully, there is a new product coming to market in 2023 called Neuralert, which the FDA designated a breakthrough device last year.  The pair of smart wristbands use a proprietary algorithm to track arm asymmetry or weakness, common symptoms of a stroke.  Neuralert can detect symptoms in as little as 15 minutes, and automatically alert medical staff.
