Keeping yourself healthy when you have Type 2 Diabetes can be a challenge.  However, according to Diabetes Forecast (September/October 2020, page 40), people with type 2 Diabetes who took a 10-minute walk after dinner had a smaller rise in their after-meal blood glucose levels than when they took a 30-minute walk at another time of the day.  The data comes from a study which was published in Diabetologia.    To get more information on diabetes, visit Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, CHOMP’s, Diabetes and Nutrition website.  You will find useful information about support groups, classes and more.

Eating Fatty Fish Like Salmon Good For Diabetics

Eating fatty fish such as salmon, trout or sardines twice a week was associated with a lower risk of diabetic retinopathy, according to a study of people with diabetes which was published in 2017 in JAMA.  This is probably because fatty fish have a lot of omega-3 fatty acids, which encourage the development of blood vessel growth, including in the eyes.  Omega-3’s have also been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease.

A study which began in 1996 of 3,234 people with prediabetes randomly assigned them to groups which were either given metformin, given intensive lifestyle (nutrition and physical activity) counseling or a placebo, found good news.  Three years later, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes was reduced by 58% with lifestyle counseling and 31% with metformin.  Two decades later, 2,425 are still alive and being followed. The diabetes risk remains lower than the placebo group by 25% in the original lifestyle group and by 18% in the metaformin group.  Although metformin isn’t approved for prediabetes treatment, your doctor can still prescribe it off label.  The American Diabetes Association recommends it for people with prediabetes who are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

An early dinner could help you better manage your weight and your blood glucose.  A recent study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that, of people chosen to randomly eat dinner at either 6:00 p.m. or 10:00 p.m., eating early was better.  The late-night diners burned 10% less fat overnight than those who ate at 6:00 p.m.  And their glucose rose 18% more and remained higher for four hours.  Eat dinner early!  For more information on living a healthy life with Diabetes, talk to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, CHOMP, which has an extensive program.

Monterey, CA Tip For Diabetics : Exercise Frequently

A blood glucose level chart showing the optimal levels.

If your job requires you to do a lot of sitting, make sure you take frequent breaks especially if you are diabetic.  The ADA’s 2020 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes recommends doing a light activity for every 30 minutes of uninterrupted sitting.  Sitting increases insulin resistance, and it also increases blood pressure and impedes blood flow.  I know that this is tough to do now that the entire state of California has been put on lockdown.  We can’t go to Point Lobos or the beach, but try taking a walk around the block!

Getting a good night’s rest is important to seniors, however, sleeping a consistent number of hours is important as well.  A review of studies which was published in Endocrine Review found that a sleep shift of even an hour was enough to decrease insulin sensitivity.  To get more helpful tips on diabetes, visit Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, CHOMP’s, Diabetes and Nutrition website.  You will find useful information about support groups, classes and more.
