Cost Of Insulin May Soon Be Capped By Law : Great News For Diabetics!

A blood glucose level chart showing the optimal levels.

The cost of prescription drugs has gotten so out of hand that regulators and legislators are having to step in and try to remedy the situation.  The latest effort comes from the House of Representatives, which recently passed a bill which would cap the cost of insulin.  The bill, which passed by a vote of 232-193 would cap the cost of insulin for both those on Medicare and those with private insurance at just $35 per month.  A similar bill passed the House last year but died in the Senate.  Democratic legislators are hoping to work out a compromise with Republicans to get it passed in the Senate.

Monterey, CA Many Retirees Not Prepared For A Financial Shock

A jar of coins with the word retirement written on it.

A new study which was published by the Society of Actuaries Research Institute’s Aging and Retirement Strategic Research Program found that many retirees and pre-retirees aren’t prepared for a financial shock, and the likelihood of that happening is increasing.  Many economists are saying that the odds are increasing that we will soon enter a recession, and Russia’s attack on Ukraine is likely to wreak havoc on the stock market.  According to the study, about half of pre-retirees report that they already experienced a financial shock, along with 4 in 10 retirees.  These shocks have reduced the assets of pre-retirees by 25% or more and their spending by 10% or more.  Experts urge retirees to build a reserve fund.  Half of pre-retirees could only afford to spend $10K or less on an emergency while retirees reported they could afford no more than $25K.  There are plenty of great financial advisors on the Monterey Peninsula and you should consult with one yearly.

Traveling With A Disability Can Be Stressful : Try These Apps

A person holding hands with another person in bed.

The disabled face myriad problems when traveling, particularly when flying.  But technology can help ease some of these problems.  USA Today did a study and recommends these apps:

Microsoft Seeing AI:

This app is for people with visual or cognitive impairment and uses the smartphone camera to read and recognize what it views.  When held in front of short text, the app will read back what it sees.  It can also describe scenes and people, and recognize types of currency.

Be My Eyes:

This app for iOS and Android uses crowdsourcing to help blind and low-vision people.  More than 5 million volunteers are available to assist users through a live video call to help with tasks like reading signs or seeking directions.

Access Now:

The website and app map out information on locations, providing details on the level of accessibility.

Google Maps:

Two years ago, the app introduced an “Accessible Places†feature so users can more easily see which destinations are wheelchair accessible.

Google Keep and Apple Notes:

These note-keeping apps can be used to keep all necessary documents in one place on your smartphone.

A new report from The Alzheimer’s Association found that 12-18% of adults 60 and older have “mild cognitive impairment†while more than 1 in 10 older adults have early stage memory or cognitive problems.  Many doctors and patients “think that it might be normal aging, and that’s something that needs to be addressed,†Maria Carillo, chief science officer of the Alzheimer’s Association, told USA Today.   “They can be diagnosed, and a delay of a diagnosis can be harmful,†she said.  Sadly, a survey of 801 primary care doctors found that 72% had difficulty differentiating normal aging from cognitive impairment.  And 60% of doctors were unfamiliar with using tests such as spinal taps or brain scans that measure disease markers such as amyloid or tau.

Monterey, CA Elder Abuse Scams Abound

A man and woman sitting back to back.

Wired Magazine recently reminded us how easily seniors can be scammed out of their hard-earned money.  One woman picked up the phone and was told by the caller, “Someone has access to your bank accounts through Amazon, and they can take all your money. I’m calling to help.â€Â  Having been cooped up in her house for weeks as she recovered from COVID-19, she was extremely anxious.  The man said he needed information to make sure her money was safe.  She was transferred to another man who directed her to download an app so he could see what was happening on her screen.  Foolishly, the woman followed the man’s instructions to download Cash App, PayPal, Coinbase and set up a Zelle account.  In a matter of hours, the scammer had taken her social security number, date of birth, driver’s license number and about $11,000.

Monterey, CA President Biden To Focus On Nursing Home & Assisted Living Reform

A group of people giving thumbs up to the camera.

A USA TODAY investigation into nursing home care during the pandemic showed widespread problems which endangered the health of seniors and in some cases took advantage of them financially.  This has caused health advisors to President Joe Boden to suggest taking a look at nursing home reforms.  The report, which was released in early March, found that at one nursing home chain with 115 different facilities, residents died of COVID-19 at twice the national average for nursing homes.  A focus on health, minimum staffing standards and financial transparency is part of a sweeping set of proposals Biden early mentioned during his State of the Union speech on March 1.
