COVID Going On Three Years Now, We Still Need Our Booster Shots

Three vaccine bottles are shown with the words " covid-1 9 coronavirus vaccine ".

Unless you are just getting over COVID-19 (in which case you can wait three months from the onset of symptoms, according to the CDC), make sure you get your booster shots on schedule.  Other than getting all of your vaccinations, there are a few lifestyle changes which can boost your immune system.  Not smoking, not drinking excessively, exercising regularly and following a healthy diet,†according to infections disease expert Dr. Lawrence Liverornese, chairman of the department of medicine at Main Line Health System, can boost your immune system, he told AARP Bulletin.  COVID-19 can also cause other problems—older adults are six times more likely to suffer a heart attack within a week of catching the flu.  Also, make sure to get your flu shot, although do know that this is not 100% protection (there are more than 200 viruses out there, and vaccinations can’t cover every one of them).

New 3G Device Coming To Market Which Can Detect Strokes

A stethoscope and heart on the table.

I read a story saying that every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, a shocking statistic.  Some are massive and easy to recognize.  Others are small and can be undetectable.  A recent study of in-hospital strokes found that most go undetected for more than four hours, which can be very dangerous.  Thankfully, there is a new product coming to market in 2023 called Neuralert, which the FDA designated a breakthrough device last year.  The pair of smart wristbands use a proprietary algorithm to track arm asymmetry or weakness, common symptoms of a stroke.  Neuralert can detect symptoms in as little as 15 minutes, and automatically alert medical staff.

Medicare Fraud Rose Dramatically During COVID

Three vaccine bottles are shown with the words " covid-1 9 coronavirus vaccine ".

A new internal report revealed that new channels of Medicare fraud opened up during the COVID pandemic.  This was due in large part to meet newly emerging health care needs of older Americans which left the program vulnerable to falsified billings.  In just one example, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a study in September that said it had already detected potentially fraudulent billings related to telehealth from more than 1,700 health care providers.  This translated to a loss to the government of $128 million.  In California, a federal jury convicted Mark Schena, the president of a Silicon Valley medical technology company, of a conspiracy to bilk Medicare and private insurers out of $77 million.  They marketed a COVID test not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and paired it with other expensive tests.  Also in our state, health-testing laboratory owners Imran Shams and Lourdes Navarro face charges of defrauding Medicare out of $214 million.  They used COVID testing as a pretext to add on expensive and unnecessary respiratory pathogen tests while paying illegal bribes to medical marketers for directing doctor’s orders to their labs.

Walking May Reduce Dementia Risk

Three older women are holding pink dumbbells.

According to a large-scale study which was published in JAMA Neurology, walking 9,800 steps a day reduces your risk of cognitive impairment by up to 50%.  Walking 3,800 steps a day improves your chances of avoiding dementia by 25%.  Researchers monitored the daily step counts of more than 7,800 adults between the ages of 40 and 79 over a seven-year period.  “I think this reinforces recommendations that we can make to people that walking is likely to be beneficial,†Dr. Ronald Peterson, director of the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Research Center, told AARP Bulletin.

Social Security Pressured By Congress To Improve Service

A blue and white logo of the social security administration.

After a flood of customer complaints which have gotten even worse following pandemic-related shutdowns, the Social Security Administration, SSA, is under intense pressure from Congress.  Leaders of the House Ways and Means Committee wrote a letter to acting SSA commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi which said, in part, “Many people, some of whom are elderly…have had to wait more than six hours to get help. …People have had to come back multiple days to get service.â€Â  Those who called faced a similar situation with much longer than average wait times.  “Agency-wide, we are at our lowest staffing level in 25 years, driven by years of insufficient funding,†Social Security spokesperson Nicole Tiggemann said in an email to AARP.

The Novel Idea Of Using Legos To Communicate With Dementia And Alzheimer’s Suffers

Author Loretta Veny published a book called “Being My Mom’s Mom,†in part to help her pay for her care for her mother who was suffering from dementia.  She found a novel way to communicate with her mom: Legos.  “When you put the Lego bricks out, it’s like they come alive again,†she says of her experiences with people who have dementia.  She got the idea from her career in security management and training, when she used to put out the building blocks for emergency planning and tabletop evaluation exercises.  She recalls a pivotal moment just after the doctor’s appointment when her mother was first officially diagnosed with dementia.  In the car ride home, she gave her mom a bunch of Legos and said, “Build how you feel.â€Â  Her mother took the head off the Lego person in her hands and said to her daughter,†I’m afraid that years from now, I’m going to lose my head.â€Â  Ms. Veney says, “That was the most profound way to describe what was coming.â€Â  In the middle days of dementia, her mother could still build with Legos and create a story.  Clicking Lego bricks together gave her a voice,†said Ms. Veney.
