Skin Cancer A Risk, But We All Need To Get Some Sunlight

A woman is helping an older man with his shirt off.

Of course, it has been proven that spending too much time in the sun without proper covering and/or sunscreen increases your risk of skin cancer.  But don’t avoid sunlight altogether, or it can put your circadian rhythm (which acts like a clock to keep nearly every organ and system on a 24-hour cycle) off.  Sunlight tells your body to start the day and keeps you awake and feeling energized.  It also helps regulate the appetite.  As the sun sets, your circadian clock releases sleep-promoting hormones.  Studies have shown that people in their 50’s and 60’s get less than an hour per day of sunlight.  At a bare minimum, experts recommend you go outside every morning for 15-30 minutes and again in the late afternoon or early evening.

Keeping Blood Pressure Low Reduces Alzheimer’s And Dementia Risk

Two women walking down a sidewalk with one holding onto the other 's hand.

Scientists know that having high blood pressure, particularly between the ages of 40 and 65, increases the risk of developing dementia later in life.  Until now, it was not clear whether monitoring your blood pressure at home and then getting on meds to control it if it is high was helpful in reducing dementia in older adults.

“What is so exciting about our study is that the data shows that those people who were taking the blood pressure lowering medication had a lower risk of a dementia diagnosis than those taking a matching placebo,” said Ruth Peters, an associate professor at the University of New South Wales in Australia, who is also a senior research scientist at Neuroscience Research Australia, a nonprofit research organization, told KSBW News.

The new study, which was published recently in the European Heart Journal, looked at 28,000 older adults (with an average age of 69) who all had a history of hypertension.  It found that a drop of about 10 mm/HG on the systolic and 4 mm/HG on the diastolic blood pressure reading at 12 months significantly lowered the risk of a dementia diagnosis.

In addition, as blood pressure dropped, so did cognitive risk, which held true to at least 100 mm/HG systolic and 70 mm/HG diastolic.  When sex, age or history of stroke were taken into account, there was no difference in outcome.

Tips For Living To 100 Years Old If You Are In Your 60’s

The number of centenarians, those living to the age of 100, continues to increase each year.  Much of this can be attributed to a good diet and exercise, but some of it is just genetic.  Researchers with the New England Centenarian Study discovered 281 genetic markers that predict with 61% accuracy who will reach their 100th birthday.  Men in their 60’s have a 3.4% chance of making it to 100 compared to 6.5% for women.  About 85% of centenarians live in cities where they typically have better access to medical care, social networks, culturally stimulating activities and transportation.  A United Healthcare study found that 87% of centenarians communicated nearly every day with a friend or family member.  Social interaction counts!  Another factor was church.  Attending religious services four times per month has been linked with an increase in life span of four to 14 years.  According to interviews by National Geographic and the Blue Zone organization, 258 out of 263 centenarians said they belong to faith-based communities.

Taking Care Of Yourself After A Heart Attack

The odds of getting cardiovascular disease in our 60’s are 77.5% for males (females are lower with 75.4% between the ages of 60-79), according to the American Heart Association.  Taking care of your heart means reducing obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, managing diabetes if you have it, and limiting alcohol.  Common symptoms of a heart attack are chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, feeling faint or weak, and pain in your jaw, neck, back, arms or shoulder.  You also need a good exercise regimen to stimulate blood flow.  “Even as little as a 5-10 percent decrease in your body weight can have a huge effect on your blood pressure and other risk factors,†Dr. Donald Lloyd-Jones, president of the American Heart Association, or AHA, told AARP Bulletin.

There are too many elder abuse scams to count on all ten fingers, but if you pay attention and don’t give out any personal information or access to your bank accounts, you should be fine.  The latest one that AARP heard about was a woman who got a Facebook message, allegedly from her nephew, saying “Auntie.  I found this great investment. A blue and white background with different types of hearing aids.

There is good news for those suffering from hearing loss—you can now buy a hearing aid without having a doctor’s examination or a prescription, thanks to a new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rule.  It allows for the retail sale of hearing aids for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.  A report by the Federal Government estimated that 28.8 million people could benefit from a hearing aid, but currently only 1 out of 5 people who need one get it.
