Scientists Discover Ways To Eat Healthier

A variety of fruits and vegetables

Researchers on the nutrition front are discovering that setting a couple of rules are more helpful than getting people to commit to more broader resolutions such as to eat healthier foods.  These can be simple things like eating with other people and remembering that grocery shopping online can be better than going to the store  Clearly something must be done.  One in 7 Americans has Type 2 Diabetes and nearly three quarters of Americans fit the official definition of being overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC.  Some recent surveys showed that obesity rates rose even faster during the pandemic than they have historically.  Making a grocery list of healthy foods and then ordering them online is a much better idea than in-store buying, which often results in impulse purchases of junk food, said the researchers.  Studies have also shown that when eating with friends or family, we tend to make more rounded meals including vegetables, dietitian Barbara Mayfield told the Wall Street Journal.  Also, make sure that you get at least six and a half hours of sleep.  The more hours you are awake the more time you have to eat and researchers found that people who didn’t sleep enough gained weight.

Nearly 74% of Americans use their inhalers improperly and about one-third of adults with inhalers miss doses.  Propeller Health’s FDA-cleared sensors hope to solve this problem.  The digital inhaler technology for those with asthma and COPD has a smartphone app linked to sensors on your inhaler which tracks your usage and dosage.  In a 2021 study of adults with COPD, researchers found that sensor users needed less rescue medication.  And a 2018 study of 224 people with asthma found that emergency room visits and hospital stays dropped with sensor use.

Eye Drops Can Replace Reading Glasses For Those With Presbopia

elderly woman in wheelchair reading a book with cargiver - Companion Care Service for Carmel CA

Those who suffer from blurry near vision caused by presbyopia (age-related lens changes that affect focusing and impact reading) now have another option available to them other than strong reading glasses.  The FDA approved eye drops in October 2021 (Vuity) and a recent study found a significant portion of people using them saw improvement in vision as soon as 15 minutes after putting the drops in.  They last about six hours.  The pilocarpine hydrochloride drops work by decreasing the pupil size.  Don’t drive at night after putting the drops in as they decrease night vision.

Smart Stethoscope Hits The Market, Making Heart Murmur Detection Easier

Doctor Robert Califf in white color coat and colorful tie

AARP The Magazine had some amazing stories in its October/November 22 issue regarding innovations in health care.  One new device on the market is a “smart stethoscope” which can detect even the slightest heart murmur.  “Five to 10 percent of people we screen have some sort of valvular heart disease or atrial fibrillation,” Dr. Antoine Keller, a cardiothoracic surgeon and co-founder of HeartSense, told AARP The Magazine.  “This stethoscope allows doctors to identify heart murmurs before they can be heard,” he said.  Heart-valve disease affects 8.5% to 13.2% of adults over the age of 65 so early detection is critical.
