It never amazes me that when seniors have the will to live, they can surmount many health hurdles.  Those with little social interaction and regular hobbies and activities often quickly fade away.  Congratulations go out to Carmen Hernandez who, at 104 years old, who survived COVID-19 not once, but twice.  She was first diagnosed last June and then again on March 8, and was discharged after spending 21 days in the hospital.

Congratulations are in order for Carolyn Salvado, a retired school teacher who celebrated her 100th birthday by going to the UC Health Vaccination Center at UC Gardner Neuroscience to get a COVID-19 vaccination.  “It’s important to get it [the vaccine],†she said, in order to stay healthy.  She was greeted at the Vaccination Center by a bouquet of flowers, but had to celebrate her birthday with relatives via Zoom.  This is her second shot, so hopefully she is good to go now.

Congratulations to Ruth Andresen, a local woman who moved to Salinas almost 70 years ago.  She sat outside of her house, waving as well wishers drove by and waved.  Friends and family, the Women’s Club and the non-profit Active Seniors all helped to get the birthday celebration in high gear.  Signs adorned her front yard with one saying “You make 100 look fabulous.â€
