Can The Secret To Longevity Lie In This Ugly Old Rat? By Derek Baine

For decades, people have been searching for the proverbial fountain of youth, and now some researchers are focusing on an ugly Mole Rat, who at 39 years old has outlived his counterparts by a multiple of five times.  One researcher believes a factor may be that Mole Rats live underground, in dark tunnels away from the sun, and lack Vitamin D.  Google has launched a biotech spinoff called Calico Labs, which is focused on combating aging and age-related diseases.  Hopefully, this old Mole Rat will give us some clues.

Telehealth Booming During Pandemic

A person holding a stethoscope in front of a laptop.

Telehealth has expanded rapidly during the pandemic, and is likely here to stay.  Before the pandemic, Medicare was limited to beneficiaries living in rural areas only, with many restrictions on where you could receive services and by whom.  In early 2020, however, Congress and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) expanded coverage to make it easier to use Telehealth services.  Hopefully this will remain intact.  Under current rules, the expanded Telehealth coverage is set to expire once the pandemic is over.

New Hope For Those With Alzheimer’s Disease

A purple square with the words " the end of alzheimer 's starts with me ".

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is set to rule soon on whether a promising drug by Biogen called aducanumab can be prescribed from those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.  Although it has already been recommended by an FDA advisory panel of medical experts that the drug not be approved as two clinical trials had completely different results, Bloomberg Businessweek interviewed a man, Jeffrey Borghoff age 57, who was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease at 51.  He gave cudos to the drug, which he has been taking for years as part of an experimental drug trial.  :We’re fighting like hell to get this drug approved,†Borghoff told a reporter.  “Every day they are making progress in cancer and diabetes and other diseases.  We need something for Alzheimer’s disease,†he said.  Fingers crossed that the FDA approves the drug—they have until June 7 to make a decision.

Pebble Beach, CA Aging At Home Is Now In Vogue : Assisted Living On The Outs

A woman with grey hair sitting in a chair.

COVID-19 has made aging at home in vogue.  The Wall Street Journal recently wrote an article on how coronavirus is changing the way Americans face retirement by “accelerating developments already under way,†physician Bill Thomas said to the reporter.  “It’s going to make people rethink retirement altogether,†Laura Carstensen, director of Stanford University’s Center on Longevity said.  Most people will age at home, and remain independent, she said.  I believe that her view is true.  With roughly 40% of COVID-19 being staff and residents of nursing homes, nobody wants to go into a facility these days.  We have been getting a number of calls from fearful children who want to get their parents out of assisted living and back home, where they can reduce the risk of coronavirus exposure.  Although COVID-19 will eventually be wiped out, there will clearly be more devastating diseases in the future which makes these facilities dangerous.
