New And Improved Hearing Aids Available

A pair of white hearing aids hanging from the side.

Now that you can buy over-the-counter hearing aids without a prescription, you should go out and check them out at retail stores if you have a hearing problem.  They are not the big ugly ones from the old days, technology has caused great improvement in design.  Some have artificial intelligence or AI, fitness tracking, streaming capabilities and other features.  A company called Phonak just came out with the first hearing aid which has a heart-rate sensor.  Another company called Audeo Fit’s tracks fitness data, such as steps walked, activity level and distance walked while also monitoring your heart rate.  It can connect to up to eight Bluetooth devices including smartphones and TVs.

Every 40 Seconds An American Has A Stroke

A picture of an object with the image of a wrist band.

I read a story saying that every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, a shocking statistic.  Some are massive and easy to recognize.  Others are small and can be undetectable.  A recent study of in-hospital strokes found that most go undetected for more than four hours, which can be very dangerous.  Thankfully, there is a new product coming to market in 2023 called Neuralert, which the FDA designated a breakthrough device last year.  The pair of smart wristbands use a proprietary algorithm to track arm asymmetry or weakness, common symptoms of a stroke.  Neuralert can detect symptoms in as little as 15 minutes, and automatically alert medical staff.

Retiring During A Volatile Stock Market

A jar of coins with the word retirement written on it.

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article with the headline “How to retire during a scary stock market,†and indeed this market is very volatile.  That, paired with soaring inflation, makes it very difficult to make sound investment decisions. The stock market performance during the first few years of retirement can have a disproportionate impact on your portfolio due to the impact of compounding.  “The five years after retirement are a pivotal period for determining a sustainable lifestyle in retirement,†Wade Pfaua, author of “Retirement Planning Guidebook,†told the Wall Street Journal.,  A 2014 study found that those who start retirement by reducing their stockholdings to 20-30% of their portfolio and then gradually push it back up to 50-70% in stocks have the highest probability of making their money last 30 years.  Those who take an opposite approach, tapering stock holdings from 60% to 30% of their portfolio are likely to run out of money in 28 years.  Also, if you retire in a bear market, it is recommended to withdraw less than you normally would (take a 3% withdrawal rather than 4%), at least until the market recovers, can help boost the long-term value of your holdings.

Scientists Discover Ways To Eat Healthier

A table filled with lots of different foods.

Researchers on the nutrition front are discovering that setting a couple of rules are more helpful than getting people to commit to more broader resolutions such as to eat healthier foods.  These can be simple things like eating with other people and remembering that grocery shopping online can be better than going to the store  Clearly something must be done.  One in 7 Americans has Type 2 Diabetes and nearly three quarters of Americans fit the official definition of being overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC.  Some recent surveys showed that obesity rates rose even faster during the pandemic than they have historically.  Making a grocery list of healthy foods and then ordering them online is a much better idea than in-store buying, which often results in impulse purchases of junk food, said the researchers.  Studies have also shown that when eating with friends or family, we tend to make more rounded meals including vegetables, dietitian Barbara Mayfield told the Wall Street Journal.  Also, make sure that you get at least six and a half hours of sleep.  The more hours you are awake the more time you have to eat and researchers found that people who didn’t sleep enough gained weight.
