Mental Health Tied To Diet

Although it would be stating the obvious that fruit is better for you than potato chips, a new study from Aston University in Birmingham, England, found that eating healthy snacks rather than other options like potato chips can help stave off psychological and memory problems.  The findings, which were published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found that those who ate fruit more often showed reduced symptoms of depression and greater positive psychological well-being.  More frequent eating of potato chips and other savory snacks resulted in increased anxiety, depression, stress and reduced psychological well being.  Eating a portion of fruit of any size was good for mental health.

Price Hikes Abound At Nursing Homes And Assisted Living Facilities

The COLA increase coming in January to Social Security recipients will help, but some segments of senior spending are rising at alarming double-digit rates.  The Wall Street Journal recently ran a story on price-hikes at nursing homes, assisted living and other senior living facilities.  It featured an interview with Dan Gallo, who received a letter saying that the cost of his grandmother’s care would go up 10.2% effective on September 15 to be followed by another 9.7% increase in 2023.  “How many seniors can afford an immediate $750 a month additional to their monthly fixed budget?” he asked rhetorically.  Blaming inflation, the nursing home said it would start adding a $25 daily fee to cover inflation

New Federal Database Tracks Nursing Home Ownership

Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services finished up a new database which allows the public, state regulators and researchers to track common ownership, something which can be very important at looking out for poor management.  The data was required by President Joe Biden due to the large amount of federal funding that goes out to them.  Nursing homes were among the deadliest places to be during COVID-19, in large part due to lack of training and caregivers bringing in the virus, which spreads incredibly rapidly.

Monterey, CA Elder Abuse Alert : Working From Home Scam

There are so many online scams to watch out for it just gives me a headache.  One of the latest discovered by AARP involved a woman who was offered a job that she could do from home.  They sent her a W-9 form and a check for $3,00.  After she deposited the check, she was instructed to transfer $1,900 via a Bitcoin ATM to “ensure their financial linkup was secure.”  After she made the transfer, her bank called her to inform her the check was fake.

Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Cap Starts In 2025 : Too Late For Many

The climate health bill recently passed by Congress provides quite a bit of relief for seniors.  However, the fact that not all provisions kick in next year has some seniors worried.  USA Today recently profiled Jackie Trapp, one of more than 1.3 million Americans whose drug spending exceeds Medicare;’s definition of “catastrophic” coverage.  Jackie has incurable blood cancer and is on a chemotherapy regimen which costs $240K per year and results in $21,740 in out-of-pocket expenses for the drug Revlimid.  “We used to donate a healthy amount to charity.  Now, I’m receiving charity,” she told USA Today.

Diabetes A Huge Problem In The United States

An obese person holding the cheese burger in his hand

Despite numerous advances in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes over the past five decades, the disease has grown at an alarming rate.  One in seven Americans have the disease, up from one in 20 in the 1970’s.  Researchers have come to the sad conclusion that there is no drug powerful enough to counter the impact of poverty, pollution, stress, and a broken food system.  “Our entire society is perfectly designed to create Type 2 Diabetes,” Dr. Dean Schillinger, a professor of medicine at University of California, San Francisco, told The Wall Street Journal.  “We have to disrupt that,” he said.  He was part of a team of experts who gave Congress a road map of how to address the growing number of diabetics earlier this year, the first since 1975.  Hopefully, Congress will act on the report which was issued in January.
