There were two new hospitalizations and five new deaths  Nationwide, there were 205K new coronavirus cases, bringing the total up to more than 13.2 million.  In California, there were over 13K cases over the last week, bringing the total to 1.195 million.  There were 1,412 new deaths, bringing the total to 265,284.  The cases are expected to rapidly escalate following the Thanksgiving weekend.  If you can avoid traveling, please do!

Monterey, CA Seniors Should Make The Most Out Of Their Home Equity

Historically, the big hope was to retire debt free.  However, experts who recently talked to Kiplinger’s Retirement Report say this may be a big mistake.  Homeowners age 62 and older have a record $6.5 trillion of “tappable†equity, according to Data analytics firm Black Knight.  Many financial planners believe that tapping wealth just before retirement makes sense if it is done for the right reasons.  Suggested uses include paying off credit card debt, doing a remodel to make your house more senior friendly, buying long-term care insurance and pay the tax bill on a Roth conversion.  In addition, you can use the funds to avoid taking early retirement from Social Security.

There were 282 new cases reported in Monterey County through November 25, bringing the total to 14,651.  Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, this is the freshest data put out by the County.  There were four new COVID-19 cases, and no new deaths.  There were over 103K new coronavirus cases nationwide, bringing the total to 13.039 million.  Those are the official numbers.  However, the CDC came out with a report today saying that they believe that about 53 million Americans had been infected by the end of September, due to the fact that many people have no symptoms and don’t get tested.  That’s a scary number.  In California there are almost 1.2 million cases now, and 19,033 deaths.

The number of COVID-19 cases in nursing homes across the nation are exploding, and both Monterey and Santa Cruz counties have been no exception.  Despite federal efforts to shield residents through aggressive testing and visitor restrictions, these don’t appear to be working.  Federal data shows that there were 10,279 COVID-19 cases during the week of November, the last week the data has been reported.  The number surpassed the previous record of 9,903 cases in late July, according to the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living.  “We have been begging people the last eight months to wear a mask, socially distance and be careful,†said Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL.  “Unfortunately, the public has not listened and or complied.  Please, be safe!

Monterey County Coronavirus Update From A Carmel Caregiver

A close up of many viruses on a red background

There were 114 new cases in Monterey County, for a total of 13,534. There were four new hospitalizations, and two new deaths reported.  Nationwide, cases were up by nearly 200K again to 11.883 million.  Deaths rose by more than 2,000 to 253,200.  In California, there were a whopping 13,725 new cases bringing the cume total to 1.086 million while deaths rose by 97 to 18,570.  These are very disturbing numbers given that we haven’t even gotten into the holiday travel season for Thanksgiving which is expected to start a new explosion of cases.  Donald Trump Jr. tested positive for coronavirus today as did his personal attorney’s son, Andrew Giulani so the White House continues to be inundated with new cases.

Researchers Studying Why Alzheimer’s Cases Are Clustered In Certain Counties

A woman looking out of the window at her home.

Several studies have found that there is a correlation between where you live and the likelihood that you will get Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia.  U.S. researchers are now turning to see what, if any, common risk factors are involved.  The data shows that the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is higher in the Southeast and Gulf States (including Florida and Texas), compared with Western states like Arizona and Colorado.  Studies released this year have found higher rates of Alzheimer’s in poor neighborhoods and in rural Appalachia compared with non-Appalachian rural counties.  Another study from UsAgainstAlzheimer’s and the Urban Institute identified 25 counties with the highest prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease for Blacks, Latinos and Whites based on Medicare data.    These studies are important as we need to identify where the hot spots are so we can devote more financial resources to combatting this terrible disease.
