Monterey County Coronavirus Update From A Carmel Caregiver

There were 114 new cases in Monterey County, for a total of 13,534. There were four new hospitalizations, and two new deaths reported.  Nationwide, cases were up by nearly 200K again to 11.883 million.  Deaths rose by more than 2,000 to 253,200.  In California, there were a whopping 13,725 new cases bringing the cume total to 1.086 million while deaths rose by 97 to 18,570.  These are very disturbing numbers given that we haven’t even gotten into the holiday travel season for Thanksgiving which is expected to start a new explosion of cases.  Donald Trump Jr. tested positive for coronavirus today as did his personal attorney’s son, Andrew Giulani so the White House continues to be inundated with new cases.

Researchers Studying Why Alzheimer’s Cases Are Clustered In Certain Counties

Several studies have found that there is a correlation between where you live and the likelihood that you will get Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia.  U.S. researchers are now turning to see what, if any, common risk factors are involved.  The data shows that the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is higher in the Southeast and Gulf States (including Florida and Texas), compared with Western states like Arizona and Colorado.  Studies released this year have found higher rates of Alzheimer’s in poor neighborhoods and in rural Appalachia compared with non-Appalachian rural counties.  Another study from UsAgainstAlzheimer’s and the Urban Institute identified 25 counties with the highest prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease for Blacks, Latinos and Whites based on Medicare data.    These studies are important as we need to identify where the hot spots are so we can devote more financial resources to combatting this terrible disease.

Monterey, CA Elder Abuse Alert : Social Security Scam

You read about the latest scams in the paper on almost a daily basis, but I just got a call myself on my cell phone with a robot saying, “Your Social Security number was used fraudulently in a transaction in Laredo, Texas.  Please press 1 to speak to an officer.”  I typically screen my calls, but since this was coming from an 831 area code I was curious and picked up the phone.  I hung up without pressing 1 and when I googled the telephone number it was a cell phone, so surely it was not the Social Security Administration.  Be careful, these scams seem to increase around holiday time.

Senior citizens are complaining to AARP that they are getting calls from Medicare claiming that because of the coronavirus, they were issuing plastic cards now and asking people to verify their Social Security number.  These are not representatives of Medicare, these are scammers trying to get your personal information so that they can commit identity theft.  Beware!

Amazon.com Comes Out With New Elder Care System For Alexa

Amazon.com is moving into the older adult market with a big splash, an extension of Alexa called “Care Hub” while also adding tools for Alexa for Hospitality.  The app allows remote connections and monitoring between older adults and their loved one.  Care Hub also offers customizable alerts.  For instance, alerting a loved one the first time the elderly person uses Alexa each day, as well as giving an alert if the senior is inactive for a certain period of time.  It also comes with features like “Alexa, call for help” which will notify a family member immediately.  This is great that Amazon.com is building its presence in this growing market after its acquisition of PillPack.

Monterey, CA Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alert For Baby Boomers

A new study found that boomers may be seeing a declining level of cognitive functioning compared with previous generations, which could put them at greater risk of dementia than their parents and grandparents.  We have all seen the number of Alzheimer’s cases skyrocket in recent years, a very sad phenomenon.  Regular readers of my blog know that both my father and grandfather died of the disease and for years I was a big fundraiser for the local Monterey chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.  The new study, which was published in the Journals of Gerontology, studied over 30,000 people in the University of Michigan’s “Health and Retirement Study” which followed people from 1996 to 2014.  It found that many baby boomers started to show lower cognitive functioning as early as ages 50 to 54.  Lower household wealth, less likelihood of marriage, higher levels of loneliness, depression and psychiatric problems and an increase in cardiovascular risk factors like obesity, physical inactivity and diabetes were major factors.
