Thankfully, technology is coming to the rescue in the form of a number of online resources which help you juggle a lot of balls at the same time. There are a number of videos on YouTube which can help you navigate difficult problems like making sure your loved one gets enough exercise, eats right and gives you tools to deal with declining cognitive function. Another resource is an online community of women caregivers called Working Daughters who have a private Facebook group to discuss various issues. “Everyone has questions,†says founder Liz “`O’Donnell. “Am I doing enough? Do I leave them in nursing care? Do I bring them home?†are frequently asked questions. AARP is another resource. They began doing live Facebook interviews during the pandemic, including one on finding respite care, another on spotting fraud and one on pureeing food. And if all else fails, talk to other family members and tell them the difficulties that you are facing.

AARP The Magazine recently ran an article about financial elder abuse, which, unfortunately, is often done by a family member. Liz Loewy, former chief of the Elder Abuse Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and now chief operating officer of a financial-monitoring company EverSafe said these crimes are all too prevalent. Sadly, many cases go unreported. A study of New York residents found that only 1 in 44 elder abuse cases were reported to authorities. “They may start out helping a parent, with good intentions, and then, after the parent exhibits signs of diminished capacity, start diverting funds,†Lowey said. “It often starts small, then progresses into ‘I wrote a few checks to pay for Johnny’s college. l always said she wanted to help with tuition.’ Or beyond that, home improvement or a new car,†she said. If you believe that you are witnessing elder abuse, please call Adult Protective Services. Unfortunately, with the wealth on the Monterey Peninsula residents of Carmel, PG and Pebble Beach are often targeted.
There was a sad story in The New York Times recently about how some fundraisers—including many politicians—trick people (particularly senior citizens) into donating more than they want to. The story profiled Steve Vaughn, who started to go through his fathers bank statement after he died and was shocked to see 400 donations totaling more than $11K over just a four month period. There were donations to Donald J. Trump, Mitch McConnell, Tim Scott, Steve Scalise and many others.  There were notes with the bank statements showing the 90-year old had repeatedly try to dispute the charges with his credit card company—all to no avail. Here is how the scam works. Fundraisers will call you and ask you for a donation and once you agree, they will enter them into the system as a recurring payment. Instead of taking a fixed amount, say $100, out of your account, they will take out $100 every month or sometimes every week. They are hoping people aren’t diligent about going over their bank statements, so pay attention! Many of them are targeting high-income areas of Monterey County like Carmel, Pacific Grove & Pebble Beach.

Everyone wants to keep their brains working in full order as long as possible, and the key can be healthy living, getting the proper amount of exercise and social interaction. The latter is easier said than done given the massive spreading of coronavirus. Although board games can be fun, with COVID-19 many seniors are turning to video games. According to an AARP survey, 44% of adults over the age of 50 played video games in 2019 versus 38% in 2016. That’s 10 million more older gamers! About a quarter of gamers play multiuser games, which can increase social interaction which will hopefully ward off early onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. Regular readers of my blog know that both my father and grandmother had this terrible disease when they passed away. There are great people at our local chapter of Alzheimer’s Association in Ryan’s Ranch. They also have a 24-hour hotline if you need support at 800-272-3900.
President Joe Biden recently signed an executive order that aims at lowering drug prices, and it actually has teeth. One provision is that the government can now take legal action against companies that collude to try and keep generic drugs from coming to market. Another allows states and Indian tribes to import drugs from Canada. He also directed the FDA’s parent agency, the Department of Health and Human Services, to issue proposed rules within 120 days to allow hearing aides to be sold over the counter. The four largest makers of hearing aides control 84% of the market. Because they are so expensive, only 14% of the 48 million Americans suffering from hearing loss use the devices. Still, some criticized the order because it doesn’t give Medicare the power to directly negotiate prices with drug companies. “Negotiation of prices is the biggest and best solution,†to lowering drug prices, said Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research, a nonprofit based in Washington D.C.
