Weighing In At Doctor’s Visits Becoming Increasingly Rare

For some doctors, gone are the days when one of the first things a patient had to do during a regular exam was to jump on the scale.  More doctors are de-emphasizing weight as a barometer of the health of a patient.  Health professionals say they are trying to avoid stigmatizing patients who may not want to come in for regular exams because they are embarrassed with being overweight.  “There’s a trend in healthcare to understand that weight isn’t the be-all and end-all,†Natasha Bhuyan, a primary care physician and regional medical director at One Medical, told the Wall Street Journal.

Obesity A Big Problem In America

A piece of cheese sitting on top of a table.

There have been mixed results on the health effects of reducing the number of calories we intake.  Multiple studies have shown that long-term calorie reduction can reduce metabolic function and slow the cellular aging process, but they have been on rats and not humans.  A study which was published in the journal The Lancet found that people who reduced their calorie intake by 12% had lower blood pressure and cholesterol and increased insulin sensitivity.  However it was a small study of 238 people so it must be followed up on (AARP Magazine, April/May 2022).  What we do know is that diets low in fat and high in fiber and vegetables such as The Mediterranean Diet have shown many health benefits.  And if you are obese, there are most certainly health benefits with losing weight.

Pebble Beach, CA Caregiving For A Dying Loved One Is Difficult : Look To Hospice For Help

A doctor and patient looking at a book

Caring for a senior can be extremely taxing, both physically and emotionally.  And when they become terminal, things only get worse.  The Hospice Foundation of America has some useful advice, the most important of which is that hospice caregivers do not provide full-time care.  Rather, they typically come in several times per week for a short visit to check on the patient’s condition and adjust medications if needed.  For full time help, you will need to turn to a Home Care Aide (HCA) company like Family inHome Caregiving.  In Monterey County, there are helpful services like Hospice of the Central Coast, Heartland Hospice and VNA Hospice.  It is very important that in addition to keeping your loved one comfortable, you need to take care of yourself.

Monterey, CA Caregiving For A Family Member Can Take A Team, Particularly If They Have Alzheimer’s

Providing caregiving for a family member can be physically and mentally exhausting, particularly if they have Alzheimer’s disease or some other sort of dementia.  At least one in five Americans provides unpaid care to family members in the home, according to a 2020 National Alliance for Caregiving/AARP report.  Fortunately, technology has increased the care options with free apps such as CareZone, Mediasafe and MyMeds which can reduce medication management safety issues.  Wearable technology like Apple and Android smartwatches let the user take and send calls and texts from their wrist, with emergency communication, health tracking, alerts, fall detection and GPS tracking options.  And the app market seems to change on almost a daily basis.

COVID-19 Can Cause Dementia For Those 60+

A close up of the word coronavirus with an image of a virus

A new study which was published this week in the journal JAMA Neurology found that COVID-19 survivors over the age of 60 may face heightened risk of mild cognitive impairment, cognitive decline and even dementia.  The study followed more than 1,400 COVID-19 survivors aged 60 or older and used their uninfected spouses as a control population.  Participants were tested on their cognitive functions using a questionnaire and a telephone interview six months after their discharge and then again 12 months after being released from the hospital.  At the end of the study, 12% showed cognitive impairment.  Of that group, 3% had dementia and another 9% had mild cognitive issues.  The researchers also said that 15% of those with severe COVID-19 developed dementia compared to just 1% amongst those who had a mild case of it.

A New 911, This One For Mental Health, 988 Debuts

A man in white lab coat and tie.

With a new infusion of federal money, The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is getting an upgrade with its own short number, 988.  That will reduce interventions by armed law enforcement and reliance on emergency rooms, and ultimately help keep more people alive.  There are growing concerns that the hotline, which is already badly overloaded, will not be able to keep up with demand.  Hopefully, the government cash infusion will be able to address this with more staffing.

Use A Network Of Friends, Family And Even Neighbors To Help With Caregiving

A group of people giving thumbs up to the camera.

Caregiving is extremely difficult, especially as the years go by and a family member needs more and more caregiving.  The New York Times recently ran a story about building a team of family members to help share the burden.  It talked about the Village Movement, an effort to link neighbors who are approaching retirement and wanted to help others.  It’s a great idea, and can help supplement hours being provided by family caregivers.  There are a number of software programs which can help friends, family, neighbors and others track the hours and duties of everyone helping.
