Monterey, CA Elder Abuse Abounds

Financial elder abuse continues to proliferate, especially in wealthy pockets of the country like Monterey County, Carmel, Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach.  This despite the expansion of the Department of Justices Transnational Elder Fraud Strike Force, which had been limited to six regional offices until late last year when they went to 20.  Federal prosecutors in those offices are dedicating additional resources to stop fraud against older people, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian Boynton told AARP Bulletin.  A report from the AARP found that the rate of financial exploitation of older Americans more than doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic began.  “This kind of behavior is just despicable,†U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in an interview with AARP.  “The [DOJ’s] Civil Division is doing everything to fight against it.â€

Monterey, CA An Interesting New Twist On Alzheimer’s & Dementia Testing

A woman with grey hair sitting in a chair.

A new training tool dubbed the Interview For Decisional Abilities, or IDA, helps to assess whether some seniors can make informed choices about their own care and well being.  Although not specifically a test for Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, it was developed by two geriatricians to help Adult Protective Services (APS) workers decide if seniors have the cognitive ability to make financial and other decisions, even if those fly in the face of what family members want.  It’s also used by hospital discharge planners to assess whether a patient has the capacity to assist on going home instead of going into rehab.  Assisted living facilities may also start using IDA to see if new residents understood the contracts that they were signing.  Regular readers of my blog know that both my grandmother and my father had this terrible disease when they passed away.  There is a great group of people at the Alzheimer’s Association in Ryan Ranch who are there to help you.  They also have a 24-hour hotline at 1-800-272-3900.

Support Groups, Adult Day Care Critical For Alzheimer’s Patients

A nurse is smiling next to an older woman.

Becky Barney-Villano wrote a heart-wrenching story about the day in 2009 when she found out that her husband of 26 years had Alzheimer’s Disease, something she knew little about.  She had to train herself to be a caregiver, and learned the emotional toil this can take on both spouses.  She reached out for help, and found a support group for couples with a spouse who had been diagnosed with AD.  She found that the support group and getting help during the day such as using an Adult Day Care Center were critical to keeping her mental health sound.  Since the diagnosis, she has become a Senior Consultant, Fund Development, at the Alzheimer’s Family Center.  As regular readers of my blog know, both my father and my grandmother had Alzheimer’s Disease when they passed away. I found great comfort dealing with the folks at Alzheimer’s Association in Ryan Ranch.  They also have a 24-hour hotline which you can call whenever you need someone to talk to at 800-272-3900.
