Monterey, CA Elder Abuse Alert : Classic Car Part Scam

A silver bmw is parked on the street

With car week coming up in August, many Monterey County residents and car aficionados from around the country are sprucing up their classic cars to show off.  But beware if you are in need of a rare car part—make sure that you get it from a reputable dealer.  Scammers have been scouring craigslist and other ads looking for parts.  They will then tell you they have that exact part but after you send them the money you will never get the part.

Skipping Breakfast Is Not A Healthy Idea

A plate of food with eggs, bacon and tomatoes.

A hot trend seems to be skipping breakfast in order to lose weight.  However, it’s not a good idea.  According to a study which was published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, those who ate more than 25 grams of fiber per day had a 21 percent lower risk of all causes of death than people who skipped breakfast.  Another study found that those who skip breakfast had a higher risk of diabetes.

Alzheimers and Dementia is always lurking in the background

A shocking new study found that 1 in t0 older adults have early stage memory or cognitive problems, signaling early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.  A new report from the Alzheimer’s Association found that 12-18% of those in the age bracket of 60 and older have “mild cognitive impairment,†a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease.

Use A Network Of Friends, Family And Even Neighbors To Help With Caregiving

Caregiving is extremely difficult, especially as the years go by and a family member needs more and more caregiving.  The New York Times recently ran a story about building a team of family members to help share the burden.  It talked about the Village Movement, an effort to link neighbors who are approaching retirement and wanted to help others.  It’s a great idea, and can help supplement hours being provided by family caregivers.  There are a number of software programs which can help friends, family, neighbors and others track the hours and duties of everyone helping.

Seniors Got 5.9% Increase In Social Security, But It May Not Be Enough!

A jar of coins with the word retirement written on it.

Seniors were happy to get a big increase of 5.9% to their Social Security payments this year, but it may not have been enough.  It was announced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics today that The Consumer Price Index rose 7.5% year-over-year in January.  That came in well above the median forecast of 7.3% from economists surveyed by Bloomberg.  It is the strongest consumer price growth since 1982!

Two Free COVID Test Options : Online Is The Easiest Option

A close up of a cell with viruses inside

Americans can now get free at-home COVID-19 tests, either by ordering online or buying them at the store and getting reimbursed by private insurance.  Ordering them online at COVIDTests.gov is by far the easiest way.  I went in and filled out the form online and ordered four tests for free and the process was easy (although the tests have yet to arrive).  Those with private health insurance can also buy the tests at their local drugstore and applying for reimbursement from their private insurer or Medicare Advantage Plan if they cover it (Medicare does not cover this).  However, this can be a complicated process.  Anyone who has tried to file a claim themselves with an insurance company knows that the process is very slow and can be painful.  Reimbursement policies differ by insurance carrier so if four at-home tests will tide you over for the month, that is by far your best bet.

American Longevity Trend Not Holding With COVID-19

An older woman holding a pink string in her hand.

The trend of Americans living longer and longer was broken last year, thanks in large part to deaths from COVID-19, although not helping was the increase in drug overdoses, growth in deaths from heart disease, diabetes and homicide.  The average life expectancy dropped 1.8 years to 77 years in 2020, well above analyst estimates.  “I knew there was going to be a decline, but I didn’t expect it to be this large,†CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics and author of the report Elizabeth Arias, told The Wall Street Journal.

A man in a wheelchair with a woman wearing gloves.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, with an estimated 161,000 new cases in 2017 alone. You might have seen it being talked about on the news or being mentioned by family members. But what are the risk factors? How can you reduce your chances of getting prostate cancer? And what are the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer in seniors?

The following are some of the most important things you need to know about prostate cancer in seniors.

How Senior Males Can Reduce The Risk Of Developing Prostate Cancer

Awareness of prostate cancer has been increasing over the years. Here’s a look at what you can do to reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer.

Men aged 50 and above have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. But there are steps you can take to lower this risk, such as talking with your physician or urologist about blood tests that can detect possible changes in the prostate gland.

Different Types Of Treatment For Older Men With Prostate Cancer

Older men are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Age alone does not increase the risk of prostate cancer, but the risk is increased by other factors, such as family history, race, and other medical conditions.
