Make Sure You Get Enough Vitamin D

A farmers market with fresh vegetables and fruits.

AARP The Magazine recently published an article about the fact that most seniors don’t get enough Vitamin D.  With COVID-19 keeping people indoors more, this is becoming more of a problem.  The article said that more than half of Americans might be Vitamin D deficient.  If you can’t get outside, try foods like fatty fish (salmon, trout and mackerel) and Portobello mushrooms.  Fortified milk is also a good source.  If none of this works for you, get some supplements!

Monterey, CA Seniors Should Make The Most Out Of Their Home Equity

Historically, the big hope was to retire debt free.  However, experts who recently talked to Kiplinger’s Retirement Report say this may be a big mistake.  Homeowners age 62 and older have a record $6.5 trillion of “tappable†equity, according to Data analytics firm Black Knight.  Many financial planners believe that tapping wealth just before retirement makes sense if it is done for the right reasons.  Suggested uses include paying off credit card debt, doing a remodel to make your house more senior friendly, buying long-term care insurance and pay the tax bill on a Roth conversion.  In addition, you can use the funds to avoid taking early retirement from Social Security.

Coronavirus Update From A Carmel Caregiver

A close up of the word coronavirus with an image of a virus

There were 282 new cases reported in Monterey County through November 25, bringing the total to 14,651.  Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, this is the freshest data put out by the County.  There were four new COVID-19 cases, and no new deaths.  There were over 103K new coronavirus cases nationwide, bringing the total to 13.039 million.  Those are the official numbers.  However, the CDC came out with a report today saying that they believe that about 53 million Americans had been infected by the end of September, due to the fact that many people have no symptoms and don’t get tested.  That’s a scary number.  In California there are almost 1.2 million cases now, and 19,033 deaths.
