Eat More Protein

Researchers have found that it is beneficial to eat at least some protein three times per day.  So, although you may be trying to stay fit or lose weight, doctors are now saying to put some peanut butter on that apple and some cheese on that cracker to stay healthy.  Eat Healthy Fats, say researchers  ’’Eating healthy fats such as a spoonful of peanut butter, chips and guacamole or toasted pita bread dipped in olive oil can keep you fit and healthy.  Two servings per day is recommended.

Electronic devices like a FITBIT or Apple Watch have been on the market for a long time but they continue to get more inexpensive and add features.  This has attracted a number of new entrants into the market such as new designs of a blood pressure monitor which can range in cost from $15-$100.  Before buying one, measure your upper arm and choose a model with an arm cuff that fits.  Avoid wrist and finger monitors which are less accurate.  For more information, go to the American Medical Association’s website at www.validatebp.org.  There are also low-cost oxygen monitors which tend to range from $20-$300.  A pulse oximeter uses light beams to pass through tissue and measure your oxygen saturation level.  In addition, check out Heart Rate Monitors which go from $200-$300.  There are two types—those that strap onto your chest and those you wear on your wrist.  The chest models are typically more precise but the wrist monitor is better suited for everyday use (AARP The Magazine, February/March 2022, page 24).

Apple Making Further Inroads Into Medical Devices

Apple Inc. is studying how it can morph its AirPods into some sort of a health device.  This could include having them double as hearing aides, an in-ear thermometer and even body posture warnings.  The tech-giant already dominates the global Bluetooth headset market, generating an estimated $12+billion in revenue from this market in 2020.  Apple has already made quite a splash in the health device market with its Apple Watch, and is also looking at using iPhones to help diagnose depression and cognitive decline.
